How to quickly add modern cladding to your home

Cladding is an important external layer of your home that protects underlying structures from environmental factors – such as moisture build-up and harsh weather.

There are several benefits to adding an extra layer of cladding to your home. Some homeowners choose to add extra cladding to incorporate insulation or secure existing cladding structures. This is especially the case when it comes to older properties.

If you require immediate cladding for your home, there are certain rules you need to follow. Follow this step-by-step guide for more information.

1. Find out if you need planning permission

Most homeowners don’t need planning permission when it comes to minor repairs or home improvements. However, individuals who live in a conservation area or other sensitive location may need to secure permission before carrying out cladding projects. This is particularly the case where homeowners intend on completely replacing timber cladding on external walls. It’s important that homeowners also follow outlined building regulations when carrying out this work.

2. Measure the exterior walls

Before practical work gets underway, it’s essential that you measure the exterior walls first so that you obtain the right number of materials. This includes accounting for the length and width of the exterior and measuring the space around windows and doors for corner pieces. It’s recommended that you purchase extra cladding to account for any small measurement errors.

3. Fit sheafing

Sheafing refers to the layer of your homes’ walls that is of board material. It functions as the initial protective layer for your home. Ensure that this material is fitted before adding cladding to the exterior of your home.

4. Install house wrap and foam installation

This stage is perhaps the most crucial when it comes to adding cladding to your home. This is because it ensures your home remains energy-efficient and protected from harsh weather conditions. First, wrap the outside of your home with house wrap. Secondly, nail foam insulation panels on top.

4. Add the first row of cladding

When adding your first row of cladding, start from the bottom of your wall. The first row serves as the foundational layer for the rest of your cladding, so it’s important that you do it properly. This means making sure that the cladding is level and successive rows are straight.

The cladding should be fixed to battens and nailed to the exterior of your home. For enhanced precision when layering your cladding, and when it comes to nailing foam insulation panels, consider purchasing an air nailer gun.

5. Install the second row

Follow on from the first row of cladding by starting on the second. Use the declination line on the material to help with precise placement. This is particularly useful when installing, vinyl, metal, or cement materials.

6. Add trims and corner pieces

Trims and corner pieces are to account for the areas around windows and doors or other oddly shaped wall surfaces. These are to be added on top of the second cladding layer and secured in place via nails.
